Press ReleaseRambus Powers Samsung's Latest High Definition Projection TV with TI-DLP™ TechnologyRDRAM's technology enables higher digital quality and performance in a widescreen, tabletop HDTV monitor LOS ALTOS, California, United States - 09/24/2002 Rambus Inc., (NASDAQ:RMBS) today announced that Samsung Electronics America is incorporating Rambus RDRAM technology in its next generation rear-projection HDTVs. Developed for the broad consumer market, Samsung's newest projection TVs utilize RDRAM memory for the frame buffer of the TI-DLP display processor, delivering crisper digital images. RDRAM memory is a critical component of the TI-DLP HDTV solution that enabled Samsung to build 43- and 50-inch HDTVs in a tabletop form factor weighing less than 85 pounds. Utilizing RDRAM's high-performance memory interface for the DLP display processor's frame buffer, TI was able to design a full system solution with just three VLSI chips, compared to eight in the previous generation. A single RDRAM device replaces four SDRAM memory devices while providing more memory performance. The combination of RDRAM memory with the DLP display processor contributed to Samsung's ability to manufacture a widescreen rear-projection HDTV for the consumer market in a small form factor and so compact that it can sit on a tabletop. "Samsung is focusing on price, performance and form-factor for determining our emerging display technology strategy," said Steve Panosian, Sr. Marketing Manager - Digital Projection TV products from Samsung Electronics America. "Small form factors such as those offered by the TI-DLP/RDRAM architecture have become increasingly critical as we strive to bring a lower-cost, compact design projection TV that is saleable in high volume to market. There is no longer a need to remodel your living room to accommodate a top-of-the-line HDTV. Employing this technology has allowed Samsung to reduce the dimensions of widescreen sets to a size much smaller than current rear-projection HDTVs." Samsung Electronics America has four new second-generation, digital projection TV models available today, ranging from a 43-inch to a 50-inch screen. Each of these models includes the Emmy Award-winning TI-DLP display processor with RDRAM memory, bringing high-definition to the consumer's tabletop or entertainment cabinet. "With industry-highest bandwidth, RDRAM memory allows TI to simultaneously improve system performance while reducing chip count, complexity and cost," said Frank Fox, Vice President and General Manager of the RDRAM Solutions Division at Rambus Inc. "The application of our technology in Samsung's industry-leading HD projection TVs further highlights the advantages of RDRAM memory for consumer products."
